EBR Shipyard is the first in Brazil to receive the SA8000 certification, an International Standard for Social Responsibility. Located in São José do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, it is one of only nine companies nationwide with this certification currently in effect. The standard ensures improvements in working conditions within organizations, based on the principles of the ILO (International Labour Organization) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
To obtain the certification, the audit was carried out in two phases, between December 2023 and January of this year, involving interviews with 78 professionals. Valid for three years, the standard certifies that the company complies with requirements such as the eradication of slave and child labor, the right to free association, and the payment of living wages that meet needs including health, education, and leisure.
According to Marcelo Lima, Director of Governance and Integrity, “it is gratifying to receive a certification that validates an institutionally and socially responsible approach. The SA8000 shows society that this matter is already part of our culture.”
President Wataru Nosaka highlights the milestone of EBR being the first shipyard and the ninth company in Brazil certified under the International Standard for Social Responsibility (SA8000). “This is a milestone that reflects our commitment to best labor practices and reaffirms our dedication to the requirements established by the Standard. It is a moment of satisfaction, the result of dedication that leads to the highest ethical standards across all our operations,” said Nosaka.
Social responsibility management is one of the shipyard’s main pillars, with initiatives focused on professional and community development. Among them is the partnership with the Semente da Esperança Project, providing children and adolescents access to performing arts through Encena-tchê, designed and maintained by EBR. The company also promotes initiatives such as Fio de Esperança, which trains socially vulnerable women in sewing and garment-making, and Tri Massa, which trains local residents in the art of baking and pastry-making.
About EBR Shipyard
Estaleiros do Brasil covers an area of approximately 1.7 million m², with extensive facilities and its own infrastructure. It has the capacity to process around 30,000 tons per year, with workshops, a pipe shop, a climate-controlled blasting and painting shop, and an external assembly area.
With a 530-meter-long quay and a 12-meter-deep draft, the shipyard can carry out integration services for FPSO platforms, as well as provide mooring and lay-up services for other types of units, in addition to load-in and load-out operations for large modules.
